Come back to the Father’s table

The Bible often mentions the theme of meals, the table, and Jesus Himself was very fond of this time of communion. We find Him at the table with tax collectors, sharing the Last Supper with His friends, sharing meals with important public figures…

Do you remember that famous meal Martha doggedly prepared while her sister sat at Jesus’s feet, listening to Him speak? Surely overwhelmed by the weight of organization (receiving Jesus at her table must have been something), Martha asks Jesus to make her sister get up and help her. Here’s how Jesus responds:

Jesus answered, “But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”” (the Bible, Luke 10:41-42, NLT)

Mary chose that which was better. She remained present, attentive to Jesus’s words that satisfy the soul. Like Martha, we may find ourselves wanting to manage lots of things instead of taking a break and remaining attentive to God’s voice. Like Martha, we lose precious time for concerns that won’t last.

Today, come back to the Father’s table, this privileged place of communion with Him. In your quiet times, He wants to draw you closer to His heart and share what He has to reveal to you.

Let’s pray together…“Lord, I’m sometimes so preoccupied with my professional activities, my family life…I barely spend time with You sometimes. I choose to come to Your feet and return to Your table to receive Your words that strengthen and give life. Thank You for Your presence. Teach me to seek You and appreciate Your presence more and more each day. Amen.”
