Supporters: “Need–to–Haves”

Supporters are crucial.
When you are a sports-woman or sports-man, as I am, you know that we like supporters. “Nice-to-haves,” as I see them.

Last week, I ran my first marathon. I trained for months. I did all I could do. Eating well, resting and training. But, I had never run the 42 km in one run.

This is the way I started. Up to 30 km, my run was ok. I loved the crowd. It was fun to see a million people supporting all the runners. But after 30 km, I reached my limits. I wanted to move on, but it was very hard. I felt like quitting.

At that moment, the supporters really made the difference. They stimulated me to move on. Not to give up. They shouted out my name and I could go on. And I made it. I reached the finish!

The supporters were “need-to-haves.”  Really, I don’t think I could have finished without them.

It is the same with faith. We sometimes think we can believe alone. We don’t need others. It is good to have some, but they are not really needed. However, God shows us that we need each other. We need supporters. We cannot do it alone.

Hebrews 12: 1–2 says: “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

We need each other. We need to focus on Jesus, but we need each other, too. Therefore, the coaches are “must-haves” for the searchers and we need to lead searchers to a local body of Christ. Not as a “nice-to-have” but as a “need-to-have.” This is God’s design. We need each other. Supporters are crucial.
