Unity as an Order

Unity. A nice word. We like to talk about this idea. It sounds great to work together until we start to do it. Then we realize that working together means that we have to deal with the ideas of other people. We don’t want to compromise our own ideas. By nature, we think that our ideas are better than the ideas of others. So, unity is nice, but not easy and the reality is that we prefer to work alone.

Christians not known as unity-seekers

It is almost a trademark of Christians. Unfortunately. We are not known as team players. We are more known as “splitters”. So many different Christian groups, so much diversity. In the Netherlands, we have more than 100 church-denominations. We are not well known as unity-seekers.

Jesus gives his order

The contradiction is that Jesus prayed for us to be united as he and His father are. In John 17: 21, he prays: “That they (We, Christians) may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.”

Unity as a binding condition

So, Jesus expects (and continues to pray) that we become one with each other. In fact, he orders us to be one. He makes unity the binding condition for the following result: Then, the world may believe that God has sent Jesus.

So, if we take evangelism seriously, we had better be united.
