The bio of a word?

Biographies are cool! Have you ever read the biography of a famous person recently? Popstars, soccer players? Or other inspiring people, like Gandhi, or Banksy. It’s often about things they’ve accomplished. The most read biography in the world is about Jesus and is written by John of Zebedee. He is called “the Word of God”. What does that mean?

Are you a rational person?

Rational or emotional? More focused on facts, instead of emotions? John got a lot of attention by baptising people, what did this action mean? John makes it clear that this is a symbol for new life. What do you think about symbols?

Jesus Gathers Disciples

When do you believe something is true? Just hearing about something is not enough for us, we have to google it, see and hear for ourselves. In the time Jesus started to work and became known, a lot of rumors were going around about him. Who is he? Where does he live? Where was he born? Can he be the prophet that was promised hundreds of years before? This part of Jesus life describes how curious people actually were. Peter was brought to Jesus by his brother Andrew. Philip convinced Nathanael to look for Jesus. After they went for themselves they were overwhelmed by Jesus. How about you?

Wedding in Cana

Christianity is boring. Christians can not have fun, don’t enjoy and don’t party. That is the image many people have when they think about Jesus and Christianity.
When you read this part of Jesus life you see that it is not true. Jesus and his disciples were invited for a wedding. As if it was quite normal. And Jesus participated in the wedding. And during the wedding (which took several days in Jesus’ time), the worst thing that can happen happens. They are out of wine. And at that moment Jesus is doing his first miracle. He makes the best wine of this wedding. Isn’t that special! Not boring at all.

Cleaning the temple

Do you remember someone said something that is hurting the image of your father or mother? I can remember that some guys at school said bad words about my mother. It made me furious.

Often people say you can not be angry as a Christian. Christianity is a religion of peace. Turning the other cheek to people when the hit the first cheek. What Jesus shows in this story is that he was angry because the people ruined God’s idea about the temple. So you can be angry as a Christian, when you have a sort of holy discontentment. In this story Jesus is also showing to the people what his authority is.

Talk with Nicodemus

Who is Jesus? He does miracles and seems to be special. You are not the only one who’s curious. A high leader Nicodemus has this same interest. He wants to ask Jesus questions, but does not dare to do that in public. He visits Jesus in a secret place in the evening. Maybe you are searching in the same way. Not in front of your friends, but secretly on the internet. Away from judgement. It is okay for Jesus. But read this part of the story: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its saviour.” Jesus talks about himself. He comes to save, not judge.

The Baptist’s Confirmation

Jealousy lives around the corner. We live in a world where we are comparing all the time. We put our best pictures on social media en share our successes. In this story we read that the students of John the baptist are arguing with him. John was one of the biggest teachers of his time. He was compared to the most well-known prophet of the old times Elijah. But when Jesus appears and start to baptise people the students of John start asking questions. They ask John: “are you not Jealous?” John answered, “He must be more important, while I become less important”. That is so not 21st century language. The key is in the sentence before: John is admitting that Jesus is the Messiah. I’ve learned to say: He must be more important in my life so I can become less important every day!

Samaritan Woman

“I think I know who you are, but I can’t remember…” Have you been in such a situation? It happened to me years ago. We were on holiday and we met someone on a hike, it was a person I had worked with. I wasn’t sure so I asked some questions, carefully (because you can be wrong). Something like that happened to the woman in this story. She meets Jesus, but she does not recognize him. He is different than all other men she knew. She had been married 5 times and lived with the 6th. And she knew that a Jewish man would not talk to her. She was a Samaritan, and Jews and Samaritans did not like each other. After listening carefully to Him she finds out who He really is, the messiah!

Samaritan Village

Watch the video below about joining a movement. A movement does not start by itself. Someone needs to take the initiative, the first step. And then others will naturally follow. I was thinking about this when I read the message of the woman that Jesus talked to. She was on fire for Jesus. A woman with a negative reputation went into the city and she shared what Jesus had shown her. He knew everything about her, cared for her. She was not an experienced Jesus-follower, she didn’t have had years of Bible Study. She was simply moved by Jesus. And then the miracle happens: people join her. Despite her bad reputation, people join the movement.
