Build your future with your words

Have you ever read the children’s book The Boy Who Cried Wolf? I assume many of us have, but for those who missed this classic, here’s a brief synopsis: a boy jokingly warns his village about a ravenous wolf on several occasions. For some bizarre reason, this kid enjoys tormenting people with fear. Eventually, a real wolf shows up on the scene. The boy tries to warn the people, but no one believes him. The wolf has a free meal, and lives are lost. The moral of this story is “don’t speak warnings of catastrophic events that are not true” because when a real threat arrives, no one will believe you.

It’s interesting to experience the power of fear and the cancerous effects of its dominion in our societies. My life was dominated by the fear of rejection. Perhaps you can relate to this fear. Others suffer from the fear of failure or fear of punishment. Robert McGee, in his book entitled The Search for Significance, clearly warns about the cost of fear-dominated lives and speaks about the cure to this problem.

The Bible promises us a fearless life in the Lord: “‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.’” (Joshua 1:9, NIV) Didn’t Franklin D. Roosevelt say, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”? 

Would you like to live a fearless life? It is possible, even though we live in a fear-dominated society. Today I’d like to give you one tool, and we’ll continue our discussion tomorrow. The Bible says, “‘You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.’” (Job 22:28, NKJV) Wow! Unlike the little boy who spoke doom, we can choose to speak life, blessings, and good things. Words are powerful. They create the future and reflect faith. God is looking for your words because that’s how He makes you a miracle.
