How to honor the Sabbath? ?

AMED 47.12

Home | A Miracle Every Day | Miracles | How to honor the Sabbath? ?

Rest may be the most neglected blessing God has given us. After God created the universe and mankind, He rested. “By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.” (Genesis 2:2, NIV) It seems so out of place. Why would the God of the universe rest?

Why would rest be listed in the second chapter of the Bible? Why would God give it as a commandment to Moses on Mount Sinai? Why is honoring the Sabbath listed in the Ten Commandments? “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8, NKJV)

Do you honor the Sabbath? Do you know how to honor this commandment?

Please don’t be too hard on yourself. Most people I know have no clue what a real weekly sabbath is. In fact, I will be so bold as to say very few Christians understand or practice a sabbath. So, what is a sabbath, and what should it look like in a practical sense?

I was recently in Israel to pray and support the battle for peace and democracy in the region. It was an amazing trip, but I experienced the Sabbath in Jerusalem…and it challenged me to the core. The devout Jewish followers were very strict in regards to the Jewish guidelines for the Sabbath. They didn’t work or even push the buttons on an elevator. The women didn’t cook, and most of the stores and restaurants were closed.

Entire families would head to hotels, sit in the lobby, eat and talk. It looked like a mini retreat every week. It was very moving. Then tens of thousands would head to the temple wall and dance. It was beautiful. I was very moved by their application of the Sabbath commandment.

I’m wondering why we as Christians don’t practice the Sabbath in our own way. I’m thinking a real day of rest with our families and friends would re-center, refresh and renew us.

Do you need rest? Try a weekly Sabbath, and see what it will do for you and your loved ones.

Because you’re a miracle.

Today I woke up and gave thanks to God realizing that for the past few weeks he has given me an opportunity to rest comfortably on a Sunday afternoon after spending hours cooking my family meal.

Your inspirational message made me smile today as this was what God impressed upon my heart this morning. You have always been on point and today was no exception. I love receiving your daily emails because they are always sent to deliver a message (s) to me.

    You are a miracle!

    Bless you!

God is so amazing. I find that He sometimes needs to underscore a bible principle for me several times before it penetrates my heart. We had a lengthy discussion on this particular scripture last Wednesday, as we are studying the book of Exodus. I again discussed the very same scripture in our weekly discussion group on Friday. So, today, when listening to your message, obviously, God is indeed making a point with me. We’re a busy world, a busy people, so caught up in the ‘busyness’ of it all, but I believe it’s time to practice the Sabbath, and see how it leads me to a closer relationship with our Father.

Thank you for this timely, important message.

    Blessings to you.

It is equally as important as the other commandments of God, may the Holy Spirit remind us this teaching on Sabbath and help us to obey
