Joy comes in the morning

I’ve got to admit that COVID-19 has been a test and a trial to many, including me. I often felt overwhelmed, angry, worried, confused, and sad. Until the virus destabilized our lives, as the leader of the International Church of Las Vegas, I led more than 100 staff, 300 volunteers, and thousands of committed people who love our church, schools, counseling center, and outreaches.

Were you prepared for this pandemic, the lockdowns, and the political turmoil? I wasn’t. I often found myself crying out to God in frustration or confusion during the day and whispering the 23rd Psalm before my eyes closed in exhaustion at night. Then BANG! I’d wake up with a new energy and hope. The Bible says, “For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalms 30:5, NIV) Please read this verse one more time and let it sink in. Did you notice that God is not angry with you and that His good favor will restore your life?

Hallelujah! Those promises are so powerful. Heidi Baker once told our congregation, “God is not angry with you.” This may sound like a simple statement, but it rocked me. You see, I grew up in a home with a lot of anger. My dad was a good man, but he suffered from PTSD. He could be warm and charming one moment and then lose it in a second. Unfortunately, I carried around this fear of impending anger and rejection for much of my life.

Can you relate to this fear? Have you been battling anxiety, discouragement, or depression? I want you to be encouraged. You may experience sorrow for a night, but JOY comes in the morning. You are going to make it because you are a miracle and God loves you more than the galaxy.
