Lightning Bolts!

I just saw lightning flash outside of my window!

We don’t often get lightning in Washington State, but it is happening right now! The lightning streaked across the sky and lit up the room where I am typing.

As a child growing up in Manitoba, Canada, I was taught to respect lightning. When a powerful thunderstorm would cut across the Canadian prairie, there were rules in place to ensure your safety. You unplugged your electronics…immediately. You didn’t take a bath because if lightning struck your home, you could get electrocuted. You did not go outside if you could help it and you most assuredly did not hold a metal pole above your head!

According to the National Weather Service, “A typical lightning flash is about 300 million Volts and about 30,000 Amps. In comparison, household current is 120 Volts and 15 Amps.” That is a lot of power, and God controls it ALL!!!

 King David wrote in Psalm 97:

“The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;

let the distant shores rejoice.

Clouds and thick darkness surround him;

righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

Fire goes before him

and consumes his foes on every side.

His lightning lights up the world;

the earth sees and trembles.

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,

before the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens proclaim his righteousness,

and all peoples see his glory.”

(Psalm 97: 1-6, NIV)

The Bible tells us that the lightning, that powerful force, belongs to God! That means that no matter how much you may be discouraged, the God who directs the lightning is for YOU!

I have a close friend named DJ. DJ was working on an excavator and electricity from a nearby power line arched over to the metal of his machinery and electrocuted him. His heart stopped beating and hope seemed lost. Miraculously, another surge of electricity shot through the metal machinery and started DJ’s heart again!!! The electricity that revived my friend is tiny in comparison to the power of lightning but the God of miracles controls all of it.

As you face today, remember that the God who goes with you controls LIGHTNING! He is with you and for you and He has the power to use you today for His purpose and glory.

Hah! Another bolt of lightning just flashed outside of my window. That miraculous display of power reminds me of how powerful my miraculous Jesus is right now!
