AI policy

Last updated: October 14, 2025.

1. Purpose, Vision, and Values

At Jesus.net we see technology as a God-given opportunity, like roads, the printing press, radio, and the internet, to help people discover and follow Jesus. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can assist, complement, empower, and inspire our work. We see AI as a tool, not an authority. It never replaces the Bible, prayer, Christian community, or human relationships. Our use of AI aims to support discipleship, make content more accessible, and foster personal journeys of faith.

We operate in alignment with legal, ethical, and theological standards. This means we act in line with applicable law, with respect for human dignity, and in faithfulness to biblical truth. AI is always used with human responsibility, applied with respect for people and their faith, and directed toward serving rather than replacing human connection.

We value collaboration and learning together within our teams and with Christian partners worldwide, so that innovation strengthens ministry impact while staying faithful to our dream: "Every single person having free access to the Gospel, to know God, to grow in faith and to share faith easily.” We believe AI, used wisely, can add momentum and new opportunities to help realize that dream.

2. Transparency of Use

We want to be clear about how and where we use AI. This policy sets out where users can expect AI to be involved and how we ensure quality and responsibility.

At Jesus.net, AI is currently used in several ways:

  • Drafting parts of content for use in online content.

  • Generating visuals and audio for use in online content.

  • Analyzing, anonymizing, and where needed rephrasing communication between users and Jesus.net staff, including online coaches and communication teams, in order to improve clarity and determine appropriate next steps.

  • Tools that automatically generate and present content to the user:

    • Ask.Jesus.net: Provides AI-generated responses to spiritual questions. The answers are rooted in the Bible and Christian values and are meant as a starting point for reflection, not as a replacement for Scripture, prayer, or human conversation.

    • HowToPray: Generates prayers that users can make their own. These prayers are suggestions designed to inspire and guide people in expressing their personal relationship with God.

When AI processes content or data, we anonymize it whenever possible. If personal information is included by a user, that information may also be processed by AI, and we handle it with the same care and respect as in all other parts of our ministry.

Our commitment to transparency is meant to assure users that AI serves our ministry responsibly and in line with our values and mission.

3. Human Oversight

Humans in the loop is our default. AI may generate content as described above, but people make the final calls, especially where theological soundness, pastoral sensitivity, or safety are at stake. A responsible staff member reviews AI-assisted outputs before publication. For automated processes, we run regular sample checks to confirm quality and alignment with our values.

Wherever people interact with Jesus.net, users can always count on clear escalation to a human when needed. This approach reflects our conviction that technology should serve relationships, not replace them: AI can accelerate routine tasks and broaden perspectives, while human wisdom, compassion, and accountability remain central.

By keeping humans in the loop, we safeguard that relationships and biblical truth remain at the heart of our mission.

4. Quality and Reliability

We review AI-assisted content for accuracy, relevance, and theological soundness. We stay mindful of cultural and theological nuances, and recognize the risk of bias. When we use “what Jesus might say” framing, we clarify that this is not divine revelation but a synthesis grounded in Scripture and broadly accepted interpretations.

Quality improves through practice. AI is a core skill at Jesus.net, developed through team reviews, shared prompts, and regular AI meet-ups. We learn from experiments, track what works, and refine our guidance. We also communicate AI’s limitations, e.g. potential errors, outdated information, or oversimplification, and we invite user feedback to correct and improve. Our goal is helpful content that opens doors to scripture, prayer, community, and growth in Christ.

By combining careful review with openness to learning, we aim to use AI in ways that build trust and strengthen faith.

5. Privacy and Data Protection

We take your privacy seriously at Jesus.net and commit to protecting personal data in all uses of AI. We handle data according to our Privacy Policy and applicable laws (such as the GDPR), and always with respect, transparency, and purpose.

  • We collect only the data necessary for a given task or service, minimizing what is used, especially when AI is involved.

  • Wherever possible, data and content processed by AI are anonymized before use. If personal data is provided by the user, that data may be processed by AI, but with the same levels of care, confidentiality, and user rights as any other data.

  • We do not use personal data to train public AI models. Training of AI models is restricted to internal, fully controlled environments, and only with anonymized datasets unless explicit consent is given.

  • We provide channels to report issues or concerns, and we commit to timely, respectful responses.

6. Governance and Continuous Learning

At Jesus.net, responsibility for AI is clearly defined. Product owners and team leads oversee the safe and faithful use of AI in their areas, and report to leadership to ensure accountability across the organization.

We actively collaborate with Christian partners worldwide, sharing principles and learnings so that AI can be used responsibly in ministry.

AI is an evolving field. We commit to continuous learning through staff training, team meet-ups, and regular policy reviews. This AI Policy will be updated as technology, culture, and theology evolve, so that our use of AI remains faithful, ethical, and effective.

When sensitive or contested issues arise, clear escalation routes ensure that final decisions are made at the appropriate level of leadership.

This policy is more than a set of rules. It reflects our belief that technology, when used wisely and prayerfully, can help us serve people better and bring the Gospel closer in today’s world.
