Addictions have three dimensions

Publication date Aug 1, 2021

Addictions are generally a cover-up for serious core issues. Every human being has three important dimensions: the body, the soul, and the spirit. Each dimension is interconnected and interdependent. If your body is ill, your soul and spirit will feel it. If your soul is crushed, your spirit will feel it. Addiction is a form of self-sedation; however, the root cause is often hidden.

Three times David asked himself, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalms 42:5, NIV) David realized that he was depressed, so he directed his spirit of faith to praise God. Your spirit can help heal you. Your spirit of faith can make a difference in your soul and body. Instead of turning to sex, drugs, alcohol abuse, or food, you can focus on spiritual healing.

King David wrote the following words after a horrible moral failure that left him feeling broken physically, morally, and spiritually: “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” (Psalms 51:7, NIV)

friend, it’s so important to recognize that spiritual healing requires cleansing. Sometimes we have said things, thought things, or done things that make us feel terrible. We can’t cover them up with money, power, or more sex. The root cause is not emotional, relational, physical, or financial—it’s spiritual in nature. Paul says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30, NIV) When we do the wrong thing, we feel the wrong way. We were created to have intimacy with God, but our own willful disobedience is the one thing that can separate us from His love. The Bible says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23, NIV)

friend, you don’t have to beat yourself up for your sins and the mistakes you make. Please don’t try to cover them up. Instead, cry out like David: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:10, NIV)

You can be free from all addictions, but it starts by going to the root and coming clean with God. Guilt is not the enemy of a friendship with God—it is the stain that only God can remove.

You are a miracle.
