Are You sure, God?
Gideon was one of the greatest leaders in the whole Bible. At that point in history, Israel was surrounded by enemies. The Midianites, Amalekites, and peoples from the East were abusing and persecuting the Israelites on a daily basis. Life was rough. Fear dominated the national and personal landscape for the people of God. The Bible says, “Now all the Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.” (Judges 6:33, NIV)
friend, have you ever felt oppressed by a boss, colleague, mate, or school bully? I have, and it’s terrifying and discouraging. Whenever people are oppressed, God calls for a deliverer. He looks for people like you and me to rise up with faith and courage. But His calling and agenda can be quite overwhelming.
Gideon found an option that he thought would calm his fears: “Gideon said to God, ‘If You will save Israel by my hand as You have promised—look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You said.’” (Judges 6:36-37, NIV) Fear is a common emotion, and self-doubt is part of our human nature. God understands our limitations, and He’s willing to provide proof or evidence of His calling.
I’ve got to confess that I’ve asked God for a sign many times. I try to be very specific about these signs, and God has been so patient with me. In 1992, I had an idea that truly scared me. After a mission trip to the Philippines, I sought God for direction in my life. At 33 years of age, I had experienced great success, but I felt a surrender in my spirit. I had a hunger to do anything for God, but the thought that came to my mind was ludicrous: “Give up your career, Paul, and take another path…a small church in Las Vegas.” Was this a nightmare? Was this a cruel, demonic joke? I had no intention of being a pastor, but I threw out an impossible “fleece”: “God, if someone offers me a home in Las Vegas for free without me asking or hinting, I’ll know that it’s You.” Yup! You guessed it. Someone walked up to me at an event and offered me a home for free in Las Vegas.
friend, God is calling you to great things for Him and others. He knows you have fears, inadequacies, and insecurities that seem to be blocking your way. It’s time for you to rise, mighty warrior, and ask Him for signs, confirmations, or resources to strengthen your resolve. God is about to do great things through you, and His word over you is yes.
Go for it because you are a miracle.
