David was having a very bad day
How are you doing? Are you happy, whole, and blessed beyond measure? Are you fighting the worst battle of your life? Or are you somewhere in between? I’ve had the chance to sit with many people in the past few months who have almost lost hope for a better life.
I remember the day that I sat in front of a small corkboard in my college dorm many years ago. I had always been motivated and goal-oriented, but disillusionment utterly filled me. I felt hopeless, hapless, and like I’d lost my will to live. I had hit rock bottom.
King David had many ups and downs as well. He made a lot of mistakes, and eventually they added up and became depression. The Bible says that David finally cried out to God and held on to one last thread of hope: “‘Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.’ But now, O Lord, upon what am I relying? You are my only hope! Deliver me from all my sins of rebellion! Do not make me the object of fools’ insults!” (Psalms 39:6-8, NET)
friend, notice that David was disillusioned with life: “‘they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing…’” David had hit rock bottom, but he did three things that turned his situation around:
- He owned his sin and rebellion. He didn’t blame his predicament on his momma or friends. He cried out to God, “deliver me from all my sins of rebellion!” Yikes! That’s powerful.
- He grabbed the rope of hope that only God can provide: “You are my only hope!”
- David realized that his testimony and reputation were important. He asked for mercy: “Do not make me the object of fools’ insults!”
friend, I’m praying for you today. It’s time to own your mistakes and sins. Ask God to forgive you, and He’ll do it in a millisecond. Then reach out to Him with the hope that He will grant you mercy and new favor. God will do it because He loves you and you are designed to be a miracle.
I believe in you!
