God Sees Your Gift for What It Is

Publication date Jun 9, 2023

One day, Jesus was watching people in the temple do their giving. He saw the rich people, who made a show of their gifts. He saw ordinary people putting in their tithes. But then he saw something that made him stop and call his disciples over. It was a widow, who came by and dropped in the two smallest coins there were. But to Jesus, those small coins were a big deal!

“Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:3-4 NIV)

When Jesus says, “truly I tell you,” he means “this is important!” We can get so caught up in seeing things as they appear to be, just as people saw the gifts of the rich people in the temple. But Jesus saw the widow’s gift for what it really was – all of her financial resources. After giving, she had to trust God at a whole new level. Do you think he left her without what she needed? I sure don’t!

Jesus told his disciples earlier, “…do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” (Luke 12: 28-31 NIV)

God sees your heart for what it is, and your generosity is important to him, not because he needs your money, but because he wants your trust. Try giving generously and see if he’s trustworthy!

And remember, you are a miracle!
