Hope springs eternal

Publication date Dec 14, 2021

I love this saying: “Hope springs eternal.” I’m not really sure where it came from, but it reminds me of my mom. I remember listening to music in our home and singing along with Doris Day as she belted out this old tune: “But he’s got high hopes. He’s got high hopes. He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes.” I loved Doris Day. She was positive, beautiful, and she could sing.

My mom was just like her. Georgiana Mabel Gonthier Goulet always had hope. Don’t get me wrong...she didn’t have an easy life. Her mom died giving birth to another child, my mom’s brother was murdered, and she was sent to boarding school because her dad suffered some type of nervous breakdown. My mom could have grown bitter or distanced herself from God, but she chose to be optimistic. Hope seeped through her smile, kisses, hugs, and words. She had unusual faith in God.

My mom always carried a small sheet of paper and a pen in her purse. I remember snatching a torn paper from her hand one day and saying, “Mom, is this scribble?” Her response makes me cry even now as I’m penning these memories: “Oh honey, it’s all my prayer requests to God. Each time He answers, I cross it off.” My mom had hope because she chose to. She had faith in a good God.

friend, do you need hope today? Are you willing to choose hope in spite of your circumstances? Are you willing to grab a sheet of paper or your cell phone, list all of your needs, and then wait in faith for God to do the impossible?

The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6, NIV) Ask God to do the incredible, and then let hope spring up again and help you float because God is for you, not against you.

Please hear God’s Word today: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV) friend, choose to have high hopes, and God will meet you at the level of your faith.

By the way, I love you more than a cappuccino.
