What is Good About Good Friday?
Welcome back to Holy Week on A Miracle Every Day.
What is Good about Good Friday?
On the day that Jesus died, it is hard to find anything “good.” Crucifixion and public humiliation are anything but good. Shed blood and a broken body is certainly not good. Satan appearing to have won this victory is certainly not good. The disciples abandoning their Lord is not good and Mary, having to personally witness the brutal death of her Son is heart-breakingly not good.
So, why do we call it Good Friday? In order to find the good, we must go back into the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus, in the grip of pain and suffering, said “yes” to the plan of God and the payment for the sins of the world.
Before Jesus said “yes” to God’s plan, I am grateful He asked for another way. When I am filled with pain, I love knowing that I can appeal to God for another way. Jesus comes back three times and asks God for an alternative to taking on the sins of the world; He is showing His full humanity in this moment. He is embracing our human weakness for the sake of our salvation. But, when the decision is made clear, God chooses our lives over the death of His only Son, we see Jesus saying “yes” to His father:
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42, NIV)
friend, what is “good” about Good Friday? Our debt of sin was paid in full! Our sins were forgiven and wiped away! The “yes” of Jesus was a “yes, you can have a relationship with God!” Our cross was carried. Our death was taken away and replaced with new life in Jesus! Jesus paid it all! That is GOOD!
“Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.”
My friend, say “yes” to the “good” of Good Friday. It truly is a miracle of salvation! Today, all the good that you can do has a glorious reason and purpose. Go out and do some GOOD! In doing good, you will be honoring the One who put the GOOD in Good Friday.
Never forget my friend…
You are a miracle!
