How Can I Know What Is True?
Countless voices are competing for our trust.
Advice arrives through friends, influencers, podcasts, videos, headlines, and algorithms. While some messages are helpful, others slowly pull us away from Jesus, even when they sound wise. When everything is presented with confidence, how can we know what is true?
This challenge is not new. The Bible tells us that the early church faced different voices competing for their attention. Let’s look deeper at the encouragement given to those believers and what it means for your life today.
When everything sounds convincing
In 1 John, believers were being influenced by teachings that distorted the identity of Jesus and confused the church. John encouraged them by saying:
“But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.” (1 John 2:27)
John reminded believers that God had given them His Spirit. Jesus also promised that the Spirit would guide His followers into truth (see John 16:13). This does not mean every thought or feeling is automatically a message from God. It means we are not left alone as we read Scripture, pray, and seek wisdom.
The Holy Spirit does not contradict the Word (the Bible) He inspired. His leading reflects the character of Jesus and produces fruit such as love, humility, holiness, patience, and truth (see Galatians 5:22-23). If an impression fuels pride, secrecy, cruelty, or disobedience, it should not be accepted simply because it feels powerful. A message can use spiritual language and still move your heart away from Christ.
So, when you encounter a teaching or a new idea, pause before accepting or sharing it. Examine what it says about Jesus. Ask:
Does it agree with Scripture?
Does it point me toward Jesus?
Does it honour Him as the Son of God and lead you toward trust and obedience? Or does it make Jesus less important while elevating personal success, comfort, or self-rule?
What kind of fruit could it produce?
Have mature believers confirmed what I am sensing?
These questions create space for wisdom.
Christian discernment begins with knowing Jesus. It is not simply having the ability to identify when something is wrong, or winning arguments about faith and the Bible.
Back to basics
Just like we recognize a familiar voice because we have spent time listening to it, discernment grows as we become familiar with Scripture.
Regular Bible reading gives us a foundation that is deeper than trending opinions. Prayer teaches us to slow down. Christian community gives us wise people who can help us test what we hear.
You do not need to fear every new idea or become suspicious of everyone. Your confidence is not in your ability to detect every counterfeit. Your confidence is in Jesus, His Word, and the Spirit who lives within you.
Stay close to the truth you already know. Keep learning. Remain humble and teachable. When the voices around you become loud, return to Jesus. The more familiar you become with Him, the easier it becomes to recognize what sounds like His heart.
He is not one voice among many. He is the centre by which every other message is measured.

Holy Spirit, guide me into truth. Help me know Jesus more deeply, understand Scripture clearly, and recognize what does not reflect Your heart. Give me humility, wisdom, and courage to remain anchored in You. Amen.
