Did I see an angel?

Do you want to have more love and gifts of the Spirit? I do. In fact, during these troubled times, we need much more of both. The Bible says, “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” (1 Corinthians 14:1, NKJV) Love must be pursued. You’ve got to make it your foundational objective. I recently attended a very inspirational event in a major U.S. city. As we left the event, I had to walk through an angry mob of protesters. As a trained counselor, I’m used to facing conflict, but there was no reasoning with these people. They were full of hate and venom. They threatened us and hurled obscenities at us and those around us. I chose not to respond in anger or useless debate but to pray for them and love them. But I was also ready to defend myself if they physically attacked us.  All of a sudden, two very large men walked in front of my friends and me. They were huge. They led us out of trouble while absorbing the majority of the abuse. It was a miracle. While we were going through the dangerous streets, I became aware these men might have been two angels. God still does miracles.  The Bible says to pursue love: “Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.” (Proverbs 21:21, NIV)   Love can be elusive. Even when we are surrounded by hostility, pursue love. It’s interesting that I don’t remember the two huge men leaving us, but I do remember a frail African-American man approaching us on a bicycle. In the midst of the chaos, I believe God was making sure we were still pursuing love. He caught my eye, but I was nervous, considering the conflict we had just left. Then I heard his voice: “Mister, I’m homeless, and I live in the park over there. I just woke up, and I need some help.” For a moment I wanted to ignore his plea. But somehow I found enough love from God, and we helped him out. Maybe he was the third angel of the night. The first two protected us, and the third made sure we were still pursuing love. friend, be eager for the gifts, but pursue love. You’re a miracle.
