Do you need God to intervene?

Publication date Oct 9, 2025

King David certainly had a reason to be filled with anxiety. He was a young man being pursued by an intense adversary named Saul. The king of Israel had declared outright war on David, and David was exhausted after being pursued and hunted.

In 1 Samuel 21, we find David in a conversation with a priest. David makes a confession—something like, “I don't even have a sword. I have no men, no army. I'm here all by myself, and I need God to intervene." The conversation went like this:

“David asked Ahimelek, ‘Don't you have a spear or a sword here? I haven't brought my sword or any other weapon because the king’s mission was urgent.’ The priest replied, ‘The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.’ David said, ‘There’s none like it. Give it to me.’” (1 Samuel 21:8-9, NIV)

This may seem like such an incidental detail in this incredible story, unless you know exactly what the sword represented.

The sword was a reminder that in spite of his own anxiety and insecurity as a young shepherd boy, God had taken care of him and helped him to be victorious, even in the face of insurmountable challenges.

I believe it was also a reminder that the same victory that happened over Goliath would happen again, because it was the same God—different giants, but still a promised victory!

If you are experiencing anxiety today, know that God is with you and that you don't need to fear or be dismayed, but instead, you can be transformed.

Listen to the words of David later on in his life as he proclaims victory over anxiety:

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” (Psalm 94:19, NIV)

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22, NIV)

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all of my fears.” (Psalm 34:4, NIV)

My friend, in this moment right now, take a moment and look back at all of the incredible victories that God has given you in your life thus far. Thank him for each victory, and then claim that exact same victory today.

Never forget, my friend. You are a miracle. Your friend,

You are a miracle!
