Do you need some rain?
As I am writing this, I'm hearing a sound I haven't heard in over two months: the sound of rain on the window. I live in the Pacific Northwest, in the upper-left corner of the United States, where rain is commonplace and normal… Except in the summer.
Without the rain, it's amazing how quickly everything around can turn brown and dead. If you looked out my window right now, you would see brown grass and droopy trees; the vegetation honestly looks depressed! The rain that is falling from the sky is a beautiful respite for the land and vegetation that just need a beautiful drink of water.
If you feel like you're spiritually dying of thirst, I hope you'll take heart today. There is always hope in God! If you have ever felt depressed, longing for better days when God seemed so close, then I'd like to recommend Psalm 42 and portions of Psalm 43.
In this particular song, the psalmist cries out in a desert land, thirsty for God. He is far from Jerusalem and can hear his enemies crying out to him, "Where is your God?"
How does the psalmist keep from despair? By singing a song to himself over and over again.
Psalm 42 says, "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life." (Psalm 42:5-8, NIV)
If you are in a dry season and you've lost your will and drive to pray, I want to remind you that even in your quietness, the Lord is directing His love to you, and at night, His song is with you. God has given you a prayer that you can pray!
Psalm 42:5-8 is like a cold drink of water on a very hot day. It is a reminder that we can offer a prayer to the God of our lives.
If you have come to the end of yourself, longing for better days and you don't know what to pray, echo the words of this Psalm, and remember that deep calls to deep in the roar of his waterfalls, and all of his waves and breakers will sweep over us once again as we are refreshed and called back to the God who loves us.
Spend some time in His word, reading Psalm 42 and Psalm 43.
Never forget, my friend, you are a miracle.
