Looking for a smooth ride?

Publication date Jan 12, 2026

I’ve been sharing about my recent flight this week, and am remembering how, as my plane reached its cruising altitude, the pilot came on the intercom. He told us we might experience a small amount of turbulence as we made our way from Seattle to Houston.

“Small” was an understatement! For the next 45 minutes, we bounced around in our seats. I tightened my seatbelt several times to make sure I wouldn’t launch out.

The seatbelt sign stayed on, and the fact that I needed to use the restroom did not make it any more comfortable. The plane continued to bounce and jostle until finally we reached a place of smooth air.

I began to think about turbulence, and this truth popped into my mind: There is not a pilot in the world who can avoid every patch of rough air. And in the same way, no believer in Jesus can avoid every single storm.

The Bible says: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV)

We are going to encounter patches of rough air, but turbulence doesn’t mean we’re going the wrong way. It doesn’t mean we’re lost. In fact, turbulence means we’re still moving in the right direction—with every challenge comes an opportunity waiting for us when the storms die down.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:2, NIV)

Even though we were bouncing around in the airplane, I never questioned if God was with me. I knew He was with me every moment of that flight, and His presence was a beautiful promise because so many places in Scripture remind me that He is always here.

Today never forget that God’s presence is your stability. Even when life seems to shake beneath you, He is not only with you but also teaching you. Even when life is bumpy, you have Someone who can bring stability to every moment.

Never forget, my friend—you are a miracle.
