From Survival to Breath
Survival mode has a way of stealing our breath. Everything feels urgent. The body tightens. The soul rushes. Even prayer can feel like one more task to complete instead of a place to rest. Often, we don’t realize how shallow our breathing has become until God gently invites us to slow down.
Scripture tells us that humanity began not with striving, but with receiving. God formed Adam from dust—ordinary, lifeless material—and then did something only He could do: He breathed life into him.
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NIV)https://www.bible.com/bible/111/GEN.2.7.NIV
Life itself was a gift before it was ever a responsibility. Every breath since has carried that same truth.
That truth became vivid in a quiet corner of Kenya, sitting on a bench overlooking the African plain. The air was still. Worship music and a few tracks from The Lion King soundtrack echoed in my thoughts. A giraffe stood motionless in the distance. Then Evans, a six-year-old boy, sat down beside me. He had walked miles that day believing food would be waiting for him. That belief alone was an act of faith. He trusted God for breath, strength, and provision long before he ever arrived.
Evans wasn’t rushing or anxious. He was present—fully alive. He was breathing deeply the life God had given him, even when his basic needs were in question. One of the basic needs of all humans is air. Even though other needs were uncertain, God had given air to both Evans and me that day.
Genesis reminds us that God originated life. Isaiah assures us He still gives breath today.
“This is what God the Lord says—the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it.” (Isaiah 42:5, NIV)https://www.bible.com/bible/111/ISA.42.5.NIV
Survival says, It’s all on you. God’s Word says, You are sustained moment by moment by Me.
Transformation begins when we stop gasping for control and start breathing in trust.
Where in your life have you been holding your breath instead of trusting God to sustain you? Don’t lose sight of the fact that air is essential to life, and God has given it to you both physically and spiritually. Let’s pray together…
God, slow me down. Teach me to breathe in Your presence and live from Your strength, not my own.
You are a miracle!
