What Am I Saved From?
On my way to the city a few months ago, a car ran a red light and narrowly missed me by a matter of inches. I was shaken and grateful because God saved me from a serious accident.
When we use the word “saved,” the natural question is, “Saved from what?” If someone is drowning and you pull them out of the water, they’re saved from death. If you’re boxing and the bell rings at the end of a round, you’re saved from getting pummeled even more! So, when we talk about salvation, we have to ask the same question—from what?
The Bible tells us that we are saved from the power and penalty of sin. That’s not a popular word, but it’s a real one. Sin isn’t just “bad behavior.” It’s the condition of being separated from God. It’s the current that pulls us under.
Paul writes, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1, NIV). Dead. Not struggling. Not sick. Dead.
That’s a sobering statement. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t leave us there.
I’ve seen people insist they’re fine—“I’m good. I don’t need saving.” But the truth is, we’re all thrashing in deep water. The first step toward salvation is admitting we need it. We can’t rescue ourselves. We can’t swim hard enough or long enough. We need someone outside of us to reach in and pull us out.
Salvation is our spiritual rescue from the power and penalty of sin. It’s God stepping into our mess and saying, “I’ve got you.”
The miracle of today is exactly that… God saying, “I’ve got you.”
Let’s pray together. Jesus, I admit that I need You. I can’t save myself. I confess that I have sinned and fallen short. Thank You for not leaving me where I am. Thank You for reaching into my life. Help me to see clearly what You have saved me from, and fill my heart with gratitude. Amen.
You are a miracle!
