The Power of Small Beginnings

Publication date Apr 17, 2026

I’ve noticed something about myself: I like BIG results. Given the opportunity to choose, I like dramatic change. Immediate transformation. A huge overhaul that is unmistakable… especially when the change is happening in a stubborn part of my heart.

But God often works in small beginnings.

Through the prophet Zechariah, God said:

“Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?” (Zechariah 4:10, NIV)

Before a temple was built, someone had to measure the foundation. Before a marathon is finished, one step is taken. Before a vocabulary is built, it starts with one word. Before a spiritual transformation takes place, it begins with one step of faith, trust, and surrender.

I have been pondering this truth lately. God is not asking me for a massive promise. He’s asking for one step. One prayer. One surrendered habit. One act of obedience.

Sometimes, I avoid starting because the mountain looks too big or the challenge too intimidating. But the principle is clear: in order to start fresh, I have to start.

Small obedience compounds over time. One decision leads to another. That becomes a path. And that path becomes a life. One minute, stretched over many hours, through months and then years, can become a lifetime of faithfulness and following Jesus!

God rejoices when He sees movement—even small movement.

Today, I don’t need to overhaul everything. I just need to take one step toward what He’s asking of me.

The miracle of today is that I can actually start. One prayer. One act of kindness. One act of sharing… and God can multiply them into a lifetime of reward and JOY!

Start fresh today, fresh and new, with one small step of faith.

Let’s pray together.

Father, forgive me for despising small steps. Give me courage to begin where I am. Show me one area where You are inviting obedience, and help me move. Thank You that You rejoice over progress, not perfection. Strengthen me for the journey, one step at a time. Amen.

You are a miracle!
