Humility in Following Jesus

Publication date Jun 13, 2026

Some of the greatest people I know are the quiet, behind-the-scenes servants who faithfully serve God every day.

As a pastor, I get to see the “invisibles” often—the people who come to pray in an Upper Room before the service even begins, the tech and audio people who only get noticed when there is a mistake, the faithful pastoral assistants who edit “A Miracle Every Day” texts (by the way, her name is Mariah, and she is a gift to the Kingdom of God!).

These quiet heroes are not interested in being recognized; they just want Jesus to be made famous!

Following Jesus is not about being recognized—it’s about being aligned with Him. Humility is the posture that keeps my heart centered on His will rather than my own visibility.

When I reflect on the life of discipleship, I’m reminded that Jesus never called His followers to compete for attention. He called them to follow Him. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote:

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10, NIV)

This verse reframes how I think about elevation. God is the One who lifts. My role is to humble myself and trust Him with the outcome.

Humility doesn’t mean diminishing my worth—it means recognizing my dependence on God.

It means serving without needing credit, loving without seeking recognition, and obeying without condition. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less so that you can serve others more!

Today, we can choose to walk in humility, trusting that God sees, God values, and God will lift us in His perfect way and timing. Let’s pray together:

Father, cultivate humility in my heart. Help me release pride, comparison, and the need for recognition. Teach me to follow Jesus faithfully, trusting that You will lift me up according to Your will. Align my heart with Yours in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Never forget my friend,

You are a miracle!
