Serving Breaks Self-Centeredness
I was pulling through the drive-through window of my local coffee shop. I was distracted, a little impatient, and focused completely on… ME! Everything changed when the barista said, “The person in the car in front of you paid your bill. He said thanks for being his pastor.” Wow! His kind act of service changed everything that day!
It’s easy for me to become self-focused without even realizing it.
My thoughts, my needs, my plans can quietly take center stage. But serving interrupts that pattern.
When I serve, just like that barista and anonymous coffee benefactor did, I step outside of myself and into the needs of others. I begin to see beyond my own circumstances. Serving has a way of resetting my perspective.
Jesus consistently modeled a life that was outward-focused. He noticed people. He responded to needs. He gave His time, energy, and ultimately His life for others. The Apostle Paul wrote: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4, ESV)
This challenges me to live differently.
How about you? Instead of asking, “What about me?” what if we asked, “Who can I serve today?”
Serving doesn’t just bless others—it transforms me! It moves my heart from isolation to connection, from selfishness to compassion.
Together, I pray that we will want to intentionally look for opportunities to serve in small and meaningful ways, just like Jesus! Let’s pray together:
Father, help me to become less self-centered and more others-focused. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me a willing heart to respond. Teach me to love like You love and serve like You serve. In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Never forget, my friend,
You are a miracle!
