The Summer Slump 😌⛱️

Publication date Aug 20, 2026

How often do we wish we had more time for God, don't we? But when that time finally comes, we immediately fill it with something else...

Maybe I'm only speaking for myself here. 😉 But aren't we ALL good at filling silence with noise? Noise in the form of:

  • Social media

  • Endless hours of watching shows

  • Work we've been meaning to get done

  • Or simply the thoughts that keep occupying our minds

And yet, this is exactly what we long for:

More time.More peace.More space to grow in our faith.

But then, when that time actually arrives, we feel overwhelmed and quickly fill it again...

Interestingly, there is even a term for this: "the summer slump."

This is an expression in journalism that describes a time during the summer when there are often fewer political or economic events happening. As a result, media outlets tend to report more unusual or less significant stories.

A summer slump.A gap.An empty space.

And those empty spaces are often difficult for us.

Because as soon as things become quiet, we reach for our phones. As soon as an appointment is canceled, we look for something else to do.As soon as space opens up, we fill it.

But what if not every empty space needs to be filled? What if some empty spaces are actually gifts from God?

"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

Maybe this is your reminder during the summer slump: don't just fill every empty space.

Because when we stop, God can begin.

Begin placing something new inside you.Begin restoring what is broken in your heart.Begin meeting you in a deeper way.

That's why this summer reminder is for you: "Stop! Stop, so I can begin."

May I slightly rewrite that well-known verse from Isaiah 43 so you understand what I mean:

"I am doing something new! It has already begun... through the summer slump I will make a road!" (Isaiah 43:19, my paraphrase)

A road to your heart.A road where God wants to place something new within you.

So remember: Stop, so He can begin!

You are a miracle!
