Living a Life of Love

My granddaughter just called, and her last words to me are still ringing in my heart and soul. She said, “Bumpa, I just love you!” She melted me because she lives out that love every time she calls me on FaceTime, holds my hand on a walk, brings me a story to read, or invites me to say her bedtime prayers over the phone. Kids have a way of living a life of love so naturally.

If I’m honest, as an adult, the phrase “live a life of love” can feel a little vague—maybe even a little cheesy. Our world has watered down love to something sentimental and shallow. But biblical love is anything but weak.

It’s strong. It’s sacrificial. It’s costly.

God gives me a clear definition of love, and it challenges me every time I read it:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” (1 Corinthians 13:4, NIV)

When I measure my life against that standard, I realize… I have work to do. If you don’t believe that, just ask my wife!!!

Living a life of love means I choose patience when I’m in a hurry. I choose kindness when I’m irritated. I choose humility when I want recognition. It means I stop keeping score and start extending grace.

Love isn’t just something I feel—it’s something I choose.

And most of the time, it requires me to step outside my comfort zone. To put others first. To forgive when it’s hard. To serve when it’s inconvenient.

That kind of love doesn’t come naturally to me. It requires a daily decision to die to myself and follow Jesus, who was and is perfect love.

So, here’s the truth: when I live this way, I’m actually living the life Jesus modeled for me. I’m stepping into something radical and beautiful.

Today, I want to love intentionally. Not just in the big moments, but in the small, unseen ones. Will you join me? Let’s pray to that end:

Dear Father, teach me what it really means to love. Help me to be patient, kind, and selfless. Show me where my love has been shallow, and transform my heart to reflect Yours. I want to live a life of love, just like Jesus. Amen.
