Surrender Is a Daily Choice

As a youth pastor, I used to take students to play paintball. Shooting small projectiles in a glorified game of Hide and Seek or Capture the Flag produced many laughs and great fun. I recall one moment where the students had me cornered, and I had no choice but to say, “I surrender!” 

Waving the white flag was not my natural instinct. In truth, I wanted to fight back, but realizing the pain of resistance would cost me, I wisely chose surrender… And it got me thinking.

Surrender is not something I achieve.

Surrender is something I return to every single day. I cannot rely on yesterday’s surrender to carry me through today’s challenges. Each morning brings new opportunities to either trust God or reclaim control.

There are moments when surrender feels natural, and others when it feels like a battle. My instincts push me toward independence, toward self-reliance. But Jesus calls me into something deeper—dependence on Him. He said:

“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25, NIV)

This paradox reshapes my understanding of life. The more I try to preserve control, the more I lose the life God intends for me. But when I surrender—when I release my grip—I actually step into true life, and life to the full!

Daily surrender means I bring God my thoughts, my attitudes, my words, and my decisions. It means I pause and ask, “Lord, is this aligned with You?” It means I allow Him to interrupt my plans and redirect my path.

I have learned that surrender is not passive resignation—it is active trust. It requires intention, awareness, and, as always, humility.

Each day, I must decide: will I lead, or will I follow? Will I insist on my way, or will I yield to God’s way?

Father, today I choose again to surrender to You. I don’t want to rely on yesterday’s faith for today’s obedience. Help me to daily lay down my will and trust Your direction. Teach me to walk closely with You in every decision. Strengthen my heart to choose surrender over control, even in the small moments of my day. In Your holy name. Amen.
