Surrender Requires Trust
I remember back to when my kids were taking swimming lessons. The moment they jumped from the edge of the pool into my waiting arms was a milestone for both of my children. They had to surrender to the idea that Dad would catch them and keep them safe.
Sometimes, we get right out to the edge of a large decision, and we surrender to fear and walk away. All the while, God is beckoning to us to take the leap because He is right there waiting to catch us.
At the core of surrender is trust.
I do not surrender to God because I have everything figured out—I surrender because I believe He does. Trust is the bridge between letting go and stepping into God’s best for my life.
Trust is not always easy. There are times when God’s direction does not align with my expectations. There are seasons where His timing feels slow, or His answers feel unclear. In those moments, I am tempted to take control back.
But Scripture reminds me of the posture I am called to live in:
Psalm 56:3-4 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4, NIV)
Trusting God means I acknowledge that my understanding is limited, but His is not. It means I choose to rely on His wisdom instead of my own reasoning. It means I submit—not partially, but fully.
Surrender grows stronger as trust deepens. The more I experience God’s faithfulness, the more I am willing to release control. And the more I release control, the more I see His faithfulness at work.
Trust transforms surrender from something fearful into something freeing. I begin to realize that I am not losing anything by surrendering—I am gaining alignment with the One who knows me best. Let’s pray together:
Lord, grow my trust in You. When I am uncertain, remind me of Your faithfulness. When I am afraid, anchor me in Your promises. Help me to lean not on my own understanding but to rely fully on Your wisdom. Teach me to submit every part of my life to You, believing that Your plans are good and Your ways are right. Amen.
