What REALLY Has a Hold on Your Life? ❤️‍🔥

Publication date Sep 21, 2026

“You must not have any other god but me” (Exodus 20:3).

To understand the first commandment, and how it relates to your life, it helps to look at the moment when it was given.

The people of Israel had just been freed from Egypt, which was a system filled with many gods, dependency, and control. And here God reminds them:

“Hello, dear human! I am the One who set you free!” 👋

I know, when we hear the words “the Ten Commandments,” many people immediately tense up. They worry about not being able to keep them. They can sound heavy or overwhelming.

But did you know that the first commandment was not spoken out of pressure, but out of relationship?

No other idol had ever spoken to the people before! 😮

But God speaks! He says: “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery” (Exodus 20:2).

No other god could do what He did! None could speak. None could rescue.

We expect pressure, but God begins with love!

Only after this does God say: “You must not have any other god but me.”

Why?

Because God knows how your heart works. You were created to hold on to something — something that gives you security, identity, value, and direction.

Today, these “gods” are rarely physical statues. But the pattern is still the same:

🫆 Success can make you feel valuable.🫆 Control can make you feel safe.🫆 Approval can make you feel worthy.🫆 Relationships can make you feel secure.

Often, we only realize how much something has taken hold of us when it is taken away. When people disappoint us or when our plans fall apart.

Today, God asks you these questions— not to  pressure you, but from a place of relationship:

What has a hold on you? Who have you given power over your life? What is more important to you than I am?

Because that is exactly what becomes “your other god.”

My encouragement:

Let God be your everything in life — because everything else will eventually fade away. 😉

You are a miracle!
