What Does Your Heart Truly Hold On To?
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them” (Exodus 20:4-5).
At first glance, this commandment can feel far removed from our lives today. After all, very few people build a statue and bow down to it. But the original context goes much deeper.
In ancient Israel, people lived surrounded by cultures that wanted to make their gods visible. They wanted something they could touch, control, and use.
And this is exactly what this commandment shows us:
God cannot be reduced. Not to an image. Not to a human-made idea of who He should be. And not to something that simply fits our preferences.
Today, our “images” or “statues” are often invisible, but they are no less real… 😧
➡️ We create lives that make us feel secure.➡️ We build identities around things like: “I am successful,” “I am independent,” “I am desired,” “I am strong.”
The problem begins when something good becomes the absolute center of our lives.
We may even laugh at people who worship statues made of stone, yet we often fail to notice when we likewise begin celebrating something created, something made of flesh and blood. Even without using the word “worship,” we do actually end up placing ourselves at the center. Hmmm…
Romans 1 speaks exactly about this. It says:
“They knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like…And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles” (Romans 1:21-25. Note: It is worth reading the entire passage).
That may sound harsh, but it is incredibly relevant today. You see:
Something can start as a good thing, but suddenly it takes an unhealthy place in your life.
➡️ At first, you simply wanted to take care of your health. Now your fitness tracker controls every step you take.➡️ At first, you simply wanted to be loved. Now your relationship has become the most important thing in your life.➡️ At first, you simply wanted to become more organized. Now your life is completely scheduled, and God’s plans have been pushed aside…
Jesus invites you into His freedom.
He invites you into a life where your value is not tied to something that can break, disappear, or disappoint you.
Ask yourself today: Is God truly the absolute center of my life?
Your heart is too valuable to hold on to something that ultimately cannot hold you.
You are a miracle!
