Your associations determine your destination

John Maxwell has changed the atmosphere in churches and corporations around the world. I’ve known him for more than 25 years. I’ve attended his leadership seminars and read his books for decades. In many ways, he’s become one of my primary mentors.

Who are your key mentors? Who helps you change the atmosphere in your home, office, or sports arena?

There is a saying: “Show me your friends and the books you are reading, and I’ll predict where you’ll be in five years.” I believe this completely. The Bible warns, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33, NIV)

David coached his son Solomon with these telling warnings: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.” (Psalms 1:1, NIV)

friend, associations are so important. I’ve chosen my coaches, friends, and mentors very carefully through the years. I’m completely aware that I can be influenced for the good or the bad.

Many years ago, I had to make a difficult decision about a long-time friend who had stumbled into a shady financial deal. Although his intentions were good, money blinded him to a bad business associate. I warned my friend and eventually had to sever our relationship because he refused to distance himself from the potentially illegal activities. Have you ever had to break a relationship that went toxic or worse?

I’ll never forget the day I appealed one more time to my dear, blinded friend. I wept with sadness at his refusal to heed my warnings. Much to my chagrin, the FBI arrested the key initiators of this company, and my friend fell into massive shame.

friend, please ask the Holy Spirit to help you choose your friends, business partners, and leaders because they will influence your destinations in life, finances, and career. God will show you because you are a miracle.
