Feeling Spiritually Disconnected? How to Abide in Jesus
Have you ever gone through the motions of faith while quietly feeling far from God? Maybe you still attend church, read your Bible, or say a quick prayer before a meal. And yet, your heart still feels distracted or dry.
The good news is that Jesus does not respond by asking you to work harder for His attention. Instead, He invites you to come closer and remain in Him.
Here, we’ll explore what this looks like and offer some reflection and prayer prompts to take steps toward Jesus today.
When faith begins to feel distant
In John 15, Jesus tells us, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
A branch does not produce fruit by pushing itself harder. It bears fruit by staying connected to its source of life.
John’s goal was not merely to give believers more information about Jesus. He wrote so that we could believe, and in believing, experience abundant life in Jesus (see John 20:31).
The apostle John understood this personally. He had walked with Jesus, heard His voice, and witnessed His life. Years later, John wrote so that others could share that same fellowship with the Father and the Son.
God wants more for you than correct beliefs and religious activity. He wants you to know Him personally.
How can we abide in Jesus?
This is what it means to abide—remaining in Him, receiving from Him, and allowing His life to flow through ours.
Abiding means making your home in His presence, returning to Him when you are distracted, trusting Him when you are uncertain, and receiving His love before trying to accomplish something for Him.
Abiding does not require a perfect schedule or hours of uninterrupted quiet. It can begin with small, sincere choices: reading a short passage of Scripture before checking your phone, pausing in the middle of your day and thanking Jesus for being near. It can also mean turning a worried thought into a simple prayer or ending your day by recalling where you experienced God’s help.
These practices do not earn His favor or love. They help you become aware of His presence, which He has already promised.
Over time, these small acts will bring you back to Jesus. They will transform your life from a rushed one to one deeply rooted in Him and His Word.
If you feel spiritually disconnected, do not wait until you feel more worthy or focused. Come to Jesus as you are. Tell Him what has distracted you. Ask Him to restore your desire for His Word and make you aware of His presence again.
A branch lives because it remains connected to the vine. In the same way, your strength, peace, wisdom, and spiritual fruit grow from staying close to Jesus. You do not have to manufacture life—you can receive it from Him.

Pray
Jesus, I want to remain in You. Quiet the noise around me and within me. Help me recognize Your presence, receive Your love, and let my life grow from a real relationship with You. Amen.
