Noah - outstanding man, designated survivor

Noah, now here’s a character! Of all the people in the world, he - at one point - was the only guy who God himself deemed just…in the entire world! To be honest, the bar in these times was set incredibly low and Noah didn’t seem to have much competition in the field of being righteous. Still, God chose him as his instrument of salvation.

Symbol of salvation

In the rich tapestry of human history, few as Noah were seen as symbols of salvation. Noah, this biblical character, is the central figure to the story that became known as the Great Flood. The tale of Noah and the Ark is among the most recognized and meaningful narratives in the Bible, offering profound insights into themes of faith, obedience, and triumph over adversity.

Evil, evil, evil

Here’s the thing with Noah. According to one Bibletranslator ‘God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night’. It got so bad that God even became sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart. Noah, however, stood out. He was a good man, well known within his community and bestowed with integrity.

Rain and shelter

The Lord God had decided that all living things on earth should end, because of their wickedness. And His method of destruction was for rain to come. Sweeping, seemingly never ending rain, until there wasn’t a dry patch of land or even mountain left. Everyone should perish. Except… …except for Noah and his family. And a bunch of animals. He was to be the ultimate designated survivor. To achieve this Noah was to build an ark. Now, we all think of this as a ship, but the actual meaning is a box or a chest: something to keep valuables in for safe keeping. So, this ark is symbolic for keeping God's people and creatures safe and sheltered from outside harm.

Horrible story

In many ways this is a horrible story. God is so angry that he is going to destroy everything on earth, by flooding them. And Noah worked like crazy to finish the ship in time. All the while the people around him must have wondered about this strange project that Noah was building in his backyard. Until the rains came…

New beginnings

But the story doesn’t end here. In fact, before closing the door of the ark behind him, God promised Noah: ‘I will establish a new covenant with you’. In other words: this is not the end of this world, nor of humanity, but it is a fresh new beginning. How this was established you can read in the Bible, from Genesis 6. Or, you can just watch the episode below of the Covenant Series about Noah.

We invite you to experience this story of Noah. A story of obedience of deep trust and of new starts. A story that, in many ways, points to another man, set apart to save the children of God: Jesus Christ.
