Living as an Overcomer

As I said in the beginning, my name is Grant. To my closest friends, I’m just “G”. I like that. There is a special name that shows you are in my closest circle. It’s a new name, and an important one to me.

At some point, the new name God has given me has to move from something I hear… To something I live.

Jacob didn’t just receive the name Israel—he had to grow into it.

And the same is true for me.

God calls me a warrior. God calls me beloved. God calls me friend. God calls me His own. God calls me overcomer.

Not because I’m strong, but because of who I belong to! The Apostle John says:

“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:5, NIV) 

That verse changes everything.

Overcoming isn’t about perfection—it’s about living with an identity rooted in Jesus. Living under that new name has important outcomes.

It means I don’t go back to the old name when I fail.

It means I don’t let my past redefine me.

It means I keep stepping forward, even when it’s hard.

It means, greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world!

Living as an overcomer doesn’t mean life gets easier. It means I face life differently.

I can face every day with confidence, hope, and resurrection power. I face every moment with the assurance that God is with me.

Now, don’t get me wrong. This is a process. There will be moments where the old name tries to come back, when it feels more familiar and like an old friend. I may be tempted to go backwards, but here is the truth:

I don’t have to answer to it anymore. Why?

Because I’ve been renamed by the God who loves me!

And so have you. Let’s pray together:

“God, thank You for calling me an overcomer. Help me to live out that identity daily. When I’m tempted to go back to old names, remind me of who I am in You. Give me the strength to walk forward in confidence and faith. In the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.”
