Surrender Is Active, Not Passive

King David has conspired to commit murder. He had sent the husband of Bathsheba to the front lines of a war to die. He had immersed himself in a web of lies and selfishness and it cost him, dearly. 

Then, in an act of surrender, David says to God: “Against you, you only, I have sinned.” (Psalms 51:4, NIV)   

He covered himself in the ash of surrender, and even though what he had done broke God’s heart, God moved to him in forgiveness and eventually, hope. David did “something” with his sin, but that hasn’t always been the case for me.

I used to think surrender meant doing nothing. But I have come to realize that biblical surrender is anything but passive. It is an active, intentional decision to align my life with God’s will.

Paul describes this kind of surrender clearly: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Romans 12:1, NIV)

Surrender is a choice I make, not a state I passively wait for. 

When I offer myself as a living sacrifice, I am taking action. I am deciding to place my body, my thoughts, my words, and my decisions into God’s hands. I am participating in His work in my life, every moment of this day, the day HE gave me.

This takes courage. It’s easier to conform to the world’s patterns or settle for half-hearted obedience. 

But surrender requires me to stand boldly, even when the world thinks I am naive or foolish. It requires me to act in faith, to obey even when I cannot see the full outcome. Let’s read the next verse of Romans 12 together:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

Transformation comes through this active obedience. 

Every time I choose God’s way over my way, I participate in His work of shaping me. Surrender is not weakness—it is strength. It is the strength to step off the throne of my life and place it in the hands of the One who created me.

Lord, teach me to actively surrender today. Help me not to simply agree with Your will in theory, but to live it out in every decision and action. Renew my mind, guide my steps, and let me experience the fullness of life You promise when I choose to trust and obey You. Give me strength today in the power of Jesus’ name. Amen.
