Afraid of Taking the Next Step?

How often do we pray, "Lord, show me the way!" And then, when He does, we stay where we are because we're afraid or lose our courage.

Sometimes we even suggest a path to God—the one we would like to take. And even if He agrees, fear tends to creep in all over again.

Peter was no different.

Think about it for a moment:

Isn't it interesting that Peter asked to walk on the water when he was already sitting safely in the boat? He could have stayed where it was safe and waited for Jesus to come to him. After all, Jesus was already on His way. 🤔

Don’t we often do the same? We want to speed things up and do things ourselves instead of waiting on Jesus.

Here's another thought:

It says, “Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid…” (Matthew 14:29-30) 

It was only once he was with Jesus that he realized how fierce the storm really was. 🌪️

Jesus had just told Peter, "Come." (Matthew 14:29), and Peter obeyed. And that's exactly where the storm was raging. Doesn't that sound familiar?

You finally do what Jesus has called you to do, what He created you to do, and suddenly you realize how intense the storm is. Everything seems to fall apart. Fear sets in. You want to turn back, but you're already in the thick of it.

Never forget who is with you in the middle of your storm.

Right there in the middle of the storm, as Peter walks on the water and realizes how uncertain his path looks from a human perspective, Jesus is standing before him. Just as He stands before you today and says:

"You of little faith … why did you doubt?"  (Matthew 14:31)  

When God calls you, when He places a calling on your life, it's because He intends to walk that path with you. In fact, He is already at the destination you're moving toward.

What seems uncertain to you, God has already secured in victory!
