Are you traveling light today?

Publication date Jan 11, 2026

I’ve been writing about lessons from my recent plane trip this week. But before I even got on the airplane that morning to head to the prayer conference, I noticed how much energy was put into luggage as people were getting ready to board their flights.

People were lined up to check large bags they hoped would make it to their destination. Others had small carry-ons, traveling light with luggage they could take on with them.

I saw one lady desperately trying to convince a ticket agent that her 57-pound bag should be an exception to the 50-pound limit. If you’ve traveled, you know that baggage limits are real! I began to think about the difference between traveling heavy and traveling light. There’s only so much weight an airplane can carry, so travelers have to be mindful of what they bring.

Spiritually, the same principle is true. I can weigh my soul down with unforgiveness, fear, or pride, and that weight can turn into spiritual exhaustion that is never resolved or transformed.

But when I decide to travel light in this world and check my baggage at the foot of the cross, the truth is, I get to fly for free.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1, NIV)

Today I’ll ask: Are you weighed down with spiritual baggage that you carry through your daily life? Or have you decided to travel light? Ask Jesus and cast all your cares upon Him, knowing that He cares for you.

Father God, give us the wisdom today to hand over all of our baggage to You. Lord, we want to travel light because we know it means we trust You. So God, we cast it all off today and ask that You would allow us to simply fly through the day with grace, hope, and love.

Never forget, my friend—you are a miracle.
