Finding Peace Amid Anxiety

A Christian Perspective

Rollo May, an American existential psychologist, suggests that anxiety is a natural response to the tension between our desire for security and the uncertainty of life. It arises when we face the limitations of our control over existence and the fear of the unknown. Each and everyone of us is likely to face these feelings of anxiety in one stage of our life or another.

Anxiety can often feel like a heavy weight on your shoulders, leaving you feeling stuck and spiritually drained. It can manifest itself in various ways—through overwhelming symptoms such as obsessive-compulsive thoughts (OCD), panic attacks, or even being afraid to leave the safety of your home. You may struggle with social anxiety or suffer from separation anxiety. Sometimes, anxiety can culmulate into a constant dread of feared future problems or even a phobia of phobias, leading to cycles of fear that seem never-ending. At best, anxiety can be something one just has to deal with and overcome in day to day life.

Feeling disconnected from God

Whatever your personal experience, anxiety can make it exceedingly difficult to feel connected to God or find comfort in spiritual practices. The moments of recurring distress coming with anxiety may lead you to feel isolated or disconnected from your faith.

For May, anxiety is not just a negative emotion but could also be a key part of personal growth, pushing us to confront our fears and make meaningful choices. Our anxieties can also invite us to seek out the true longing for safety and security behind our fears: the refuge with God. It’s important to remember that our experiences of anxiety do not in any way diminish your worth in God’s eyes or His love for you. In fact, He invites you to find rest and healing in His presence. In this article you will find practical steps that will help you find peace through reading the Bible.

What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?

The Bible does not ignore anxiety but speaks to it directly. Scriptures encourage us to bring our burdens before God. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This verse points us toward the practice of surrendering our worries to God in prayer, trusting that His peace will replace our fears.

Psalm 34:4 also offers comfort, "I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears." This promise extends to every type of all our anxieties. God is willing to walk with you through the struggles and provide deliverance.

Understanding Anxiety and Faith

While it’s important to acknowledge that anxiety is a condition that may require medical treatment or therapy (and we encourage you to seek professional help if needed!), spiritual practices can play a vital role in healing. Reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on God’s word can help soothe an anxious mind and bring a sense of peace and clarity that often feels out of reach.

Practical Steps to Finding Peace

  1. Seek God in Prayer: Bring your fears to God in prayer. Be honest about what you're experiencing, whether it's anxiety syndrome, social anxiety, or another struggle. Prayer is a powerful way to find refuge in God and experience His peace.

  2. Engage with Scripture: The Bible is filled with passages that can provide comfort and hope. Start by reading verses that specifically address fear and anxiety. The Word of God is a source of life and strength that can uplift your spirit.

  3. Build a Supportive Community: Connect with other believers who can walk alongside you during difficult times. Isolation can worsen anxiety, but sharing your struggles with a trusted friend or a faith community can provide relief.

  4. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If your anxiety is severe—such as persistent panic attacks or phobia of phobias—it’s okay to seek medical advice or counseling. God often works through professionals to bring healing.

Remember, you are not alone in your struggles. Many people in the Bible also faced moments of deep anxiety and despair, including King David, who openly expressed his fears and sought God’s comfort (Psalm 94:19). Jesus Himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane, experienced deep anguish before His crucifixion (Luke 22:44). He understands what it means to feel overwhelmed by the weight of suffering.
