Are you sinking?

We’re continuing our series based on the movie The Shack (based on the bestselling book by Paul Young). The movie tells the story of Mack, a man who lost his daughter through tragic circumstances and responded to a mysterious invitation from God. If you haven’t seen it or would like to see it again, I invite you to watch it by clicking on this link.

In one dramatic scene, as Mack is trying to cross the lake, an unexpected event happens: his boat starts to rock dangerously and fill up with water…really dark water. That’s when Jesus comes to help Mack and get him out of this situation. I love this scene because it so wonderfully illustrates the fact that our Savior remains beside us, ready to help us. (read the Bible, Matthew 28:20)

Yet, it’s true that some things can destabilize us…the unexpected, the past, grief…They can literally capsize us. They can sometimes even shake our faith. Our eyes are no longer fixed on Christ, but on our suffering. And when it fills the boat of our lives, it prevents us from going forward and can cause us to sink.

Listening to the voice of past pain prevents us from hearing Jesus’ voice. Choose to listen to the voice of Jesus, as this song says, rather than the voice of your past suffering.

If you’re going through a situation like this, I’d love to help you by praying with you…“Lord, You know what I’m going through. Better than anyone, You know because You see me. Help me to stop looking at my past, my suffering, and to fix my gaze on You instead. Fill me with Your peace and joy, Jesus. Amen.”
