How to bring an end to 2020…

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a rough year with the COVID-19 virus, shutdowns, riots, civil unrest, and countless other trials. I can’t wait to start a new chapter, but first, we need to bring closure to 2020.

Closure is a counseling term that refers to “Finality; a letting go of what once was. Finding closure implies a complete acceptance of what has happened and an honoring of the transition away from what’s finished to something new. In other words, closure describes the ability to go beyond imposed limitations in order to find different possibilities” (Psychology Today). I like to use the analogy of tying our shoes or taking out the garbage. In order for us to move into 2021, we need to move out of 2020.

Would you like to bring closure to 2020 and take the appropriate steps to enter the new year with faith, hope, and a desire to rebuild?

Paul the Apostle had a rough life after he accepted Christ, but he had a secret weapon that helped him keep moving forward: “…but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,” (Philippians 3:13, NKJV).

Paul had one focus that helped him move into his destiny: he forgot the past and reached for what was ahead.

This “one thing” philosophy reminds me of Curly in City Slickers: “One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that…”. The old, mysterious cowhand spoke cryptically about the “One Thing” to his apprentices.

What is the one thing that you can do to forget 2020 and reach for the good of 2021?

I’d like to offer a few suggestions I hope will be helpful:

  1. Forgive everyone who has hurt you, disappointed you, or maligned you in any way. When Paul spoke about forgetting, he was referring to the act of letting go of the past. Forgiveness has helped me let go.
  2. Ask God to heal you of all trauma and hurt from your past.
  3. Start reaching for the future good, goals, and visions for you, your family, and your business. An old friend once told me, “when you’re going through hell, don’t stop.”

Don’t stop or look back at all the setbacks. Look forward to a new you in Christ.

Because you are designed to be a miracle.

Well said. This was the worst year of my life and it had nothing to do with Covid (other than making it harder to get doctor appointments). My health has been issue for first time in my life but I’m choosing to believe that this has happened for a reason, bringing me back to God!
