My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

“‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’” (the Bible, Matthew 27:46, NLT)

As a man, Jesus had a perfect relationship with His Father. A bit like a key with its lock, a unique combination that opens heaven for us.

“‘I am in the Father and the Father is in me,’” “‘I do only what I see the Father doing,’” “‘Whatever the Father does, the Son also does,’” He said. (see John 14:11 and John 5:19)

  • One day, Jesus declared, “‘I know that You always hear Me.’” (John 11:42, NKJV) Then He prayed, and a dead man was resurrected!
  • During Jesus’ baptism, heaven opened, and the Father’s voice was heard saying, “‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’” (Matthew 3:17)
  • And when Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He started with these words: “‘Our Father in heaven.’” (Matthew 6:9)

Yet one day, Jesus cried out to His Father, “‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’” (Matthew 27:46, NLT) That day, for the first time, Jesus was separated from His Father. And He felt alone and abandoned.

  • Jesus was mentally exhausted from the emotional burden and strain. All those people He had loved, healed, and taught who hatefully demanded His crucifixion…it was unbearable. And what about His own disciples who had abandoned Him, denied Him, betrayed Him, and even (in one’s case) sold Him?
  • Jesus was physically destroyed. He had to carry that cross through Jerusalem’s streets after enduring the whip that had shredded His back. He was left bloody, crowned with thorns, with carpenter’s nails driven into His hands and feet. Thirsty and dying.
  • Jesus was spiritually devastated because every sin of every human being was concentrated and laid upon Him. All of hell was unleashed against Him. The demons sneered at how the Son of God was not only alone in the world…but also in the universe.

Then Jesus called to His Father, but for the first time the One who always heard Him gave no answer. He was then left alone, with no escape. Death was inevitable.

But why did all of this happen? For you! He was abandoned once and for all so that you would never feel abandoned. You no longer have to carry your faults, your sins, or your guilt. You can be emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually restored. God, your Father who loves you, will never, EVER abandon you. It is finished!
